Good day my friends from District 2240,
I bring you warm felicitations from Rotary International District 9104. I believe things are gradually taking shape in your district as we approach the end of our third month.
Rotary International District 9104 was carved out of District 9102 and became operational effective July 01, 2023, making Ghana a single-country District. This situation presents enormous opportunity regarding the need to embark on significant and impactful projects in a bid to leaving a lasting legacy for the district in tandem with the objectives of our organisation.
Consequently, we have identified a huge gap in the cold chain management at health facilities across the country. In conjunction with the relevant heath authorities (Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service and Expanded Programme on Immunization), a comprehensive needs assessment has been undertaken to specifically identify communities that are in dire need of such facilities.
Permit me to give you a brief about the project and the need for this mail.
Presently, there are about 2,223 healthcare facilities across Ghana that are without Cold Chain Equipment (CCE). This includes 326 that require Solar Direct Devices (Panel, Invertor and Fridge). As a district, we intend to address this important need by embarking on a multi-year project of catering for at least 100 SDDs per year. We have gone ahead to undertake a pilot project in collaboration with one of the Rotary clubs in our district.
In the normal scheme of things, vaccines are supposed to kept at every healthcare facility, irrespective of the size or population of the community it serves. These vaccines should be accessible by the intended beneficiaries in a timeous manner and in good condition bearing in mind their expiration dates and efficacy especially considering they must be stored at some prescribed temperature.
However, the status quo is such that there are numerous healthcare facilities that do not have appropriate means of storing the vaccines and this necessitates keeping them at regional or District offices which are several miles from the last mile (where the direct beneficiaries can easily have access). This implies that anytime there is the need to have vaccines, they must be moved from either the regional or the district offices but these always pose challenges to the last mile.
We intend to provide internationally specified vaccine fridges that will keep the vaccines at the required temperatures and solar panels as well to serve as means of regular and stable power source. This will completely address the need.
Kindly find a one-page synopsis of the project attached to this mail.
We are seeking either one or both of the two options below from you:
