Missing the Flight, Winning the Championship – Trevor Johnson’s Memorable Week in Brno

Interview with Rotary Senior Category 70+ winner

At the 49th European Rotary Golf Championship in Brno, Rotary Senior Category 70+ winner Trevor Johnson turned an unlucky start into an unforgettable triumph. In this interview, he reflects on the highlights of the week, what Rotary means to him, and why events like these are so much more than just golf.

  1. Trevor, how did it feel to win your category at this year's European Rotary Championship?
It didn’t start well for me – I missed my Sunday flight to Brno and had to take a Prague–Vienna train, arriving 8 hours late and £200 poorer. But in the end, everything turned out perfectly. Just before the trip, I took a quick 30-minute golf lesson focused on wedges – and it worked like magic! Winning the Senior Category 4 was a wonderful surprise. Missing the plane and still winning – that’s a memory that will stay with me forever.
  2. What does Rotary mean to you personally?
To me, Rotary is about friendship, purpose, and service – and events like this championship embody all of that. The golf is only one part of the experience. The fellowship, hospitality, and cultural program are equally memorable.
  3. How long have you been a Rotarian and what role does golf play in your Rotary journey?
I’ve been a Rotarian for many years and had the honour of serving as IGFR Director from 2016 to 2024. Golf has always been a great connector in Rotary – it brings people together and creates lasting bonds.
  4. Are you involved in any specific projects, committees, or areas of service within Rotary?
Over the years I’ve been actively involved in Rotary leadership, especially within the Rotary Golf Fellowship. It has allowed me to meet wonderful people and promote service through sport.
  5. How did you experience the atmosphere of the championship in Brno? Was this your first time in the region?
Yes, I must admit – I had never even heard of Brno before! But now I can say it was one of the best championships I’ve ever attended. Thanks to the excellent organisation led by Katarina, her team, and Marie as the newly appointed European Chair. The atmosphere was fantastic – both on the course and during the evening events.
  6. What would you say to other Rotarians who are considering participating in future editions of this event?
Don’t hesitate! Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, you’ll be warmly welcomed. The golf is challenging, but the fellowship is even more rewarding. Mark your calendars for Lyon 2026!
  7. Is there any memory or moment from the championship week that will stay with you?
Many! The beauty of Lednice Castle, the wine tasting at Chateau Valtice, and standing in the same hall where Napoleon signed the peace treaty – that was unforgettable. And of course, the view from Hole 16 overlooking Slavkov u Brna. But above all – missing my flight and still winning the Seniors!

Heartfelt thanks for the answers to Trevor Johnson, PDG of Rotary District 1130 London and IGFR Director 2016–2024
