Governor Ivana Lengová explains the two ways D 2240 clubs can help the victims of the catastrophic floods in Nepal: directly through a partner Rotary club in Kathmandu (NEPAL 1), or through The Rotary Foundation's Disaster Response programme (NEPAL 2). Contributions are collected until 31 October.
Dear Rotarians,
in connection with the catastrophic floods in Nepal, together with the Rotary Foundation team we looked for the most suitable way for D 2240 clubs to contribute to helping the affected areas.
Two ways of support are available to our clubs:
1. Direct help through a Rotary club in Kathmandu
The first option is to provide funds through a partner Rotary club in Kathmandu, with which Rotary Club Prague International has long cooperated and with which it is currently preparing the third phase of a joint Global Grant.
This kind of targeted humanitarian aid is common practice in Rotary. A similar model was used, for example, to help Ukraine, when Rotary Club Košice Classic set up a separate account to which Rotary clubs from various countries sent financial contributions. From these funds, specific humanitarian aid was then provided as agreed with the donors, or the funds were sent directly to partners in Ukraine.
Help for Nepal will work the same way. The advantage of this option is that the funds will be earmarked for help in Nepal and used in cooperation with the local Rotary club.
2. A contribution through The Rotary Foundation – Disaster Response
The second option is to send funds directly to The Rotary Foundation to support the Disaster Response Grants programme.
With this option, however, it is not possible to specify that a particular contribution will be used exclusively to help Nepal. The Rotary Foundation decides how the funds are used according to current needs and priorities in disasters around the world, and supports individual Disaster Response Grants accordingly.
Nepal is currently among the countries receiving a significant share of The Rotary Foundation's support through Disaster Response Grants, but with this option it cannot be guaranteed that a particular donation will be used exclusively for Nepal.
How to contribute
We will collect club contributions on the account of the Rotary Foundation D 2240. When making the payment, please state one of the following options in the payment note:
NEPAL 1 – if you want your contribution to be used specifically to help Nepal through the partner Rotary club in Kathmandu.
NEPAL 2 – if you want to contribute through The Rotary Foundation to the Disaster Response programme, where The Rotary Foundation will decide on the specific use of the funds according to current priorities.
After the collection ends, D 2240 will transfer the funds collected, according to the option chosen, either to the partner Rotary club in Kathmandu or to The Rotary Foundation.
The deadline for contributions is 31 October.
Thank you very much for every contribution and every expression of solidarity with the people affected by the catastrophic floods in Nepal.

Yours in Rotary,
