West Denmark Camp 2024

Nina Straková

Since I enjoyed last year's Rotary summer camp so much, I decided to sign up again this year—and I’m so glad I did.

I spent my Rotary Youth Exchange in one of the happiest countries in the world: Denmark. From the moment I knew I’d be going, I was counting down the days until departure.

During the first few days, I stayed with my host family, for which I was very grateful. We went on numerous outings, celebrated birthdays, enjoyed Danish nature, tried our hand at fishing, and experienced Denmark’s famously unpredictable weather. My best memory is from Henne Beach, which I visited with some other camp participants. For a moment, I almost forgot I was in Denmark, given how different it felt from the typical weather. Some even dared to brave the cold North Sea! Sadly, my time with them flew by all too quickly.

In the following days, we moved to a Danish school where the schedule was full of diverse activities. We visited many places in a short time, including Denmark's oldest city, Ribe, a Viking village, Legoland, and a WWII German bunker. I learned about the Danish school system, which is quite different from those in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. We also enjoyed various sports, like golf, which I found surprisingly fun, along with bowling, swimming, and fishing. A memorable trip to a local dairy farm gave insight into the region's agricultural focus, with farms and grazing cattle everywhere.

The hardest part was saying goodbye. Throughout my stay, I met many inspiring people who enriched my life in meaningful ways. Although there's a stereotype that people from the North are quiet and reserved, that wasn’t always the case. I found them more relaxed and content. I’m grateful for the experience, as I made fantastic friends with whom I’m still in touch. A piece of my heart will always remain in Denmark..

Ďakujem všetkým rotariánom, ktorí sa podieľali na mojej výmene.

Vďaka, za krásne leto na ktoré budem ešte dlho spomínať
